Sunrise lends fiery light to cloud cover on Haleakala Peak at Haleakala National Park in Maui, Hawaii.

Fire on Haleakala Peak

Fiery orange light paints the cloud cover under Haleakala Peak at sunrise. The peak is in front and from there to the rear peak is Kaupo Gap. A white balance trick fools the camera into compensating with orange, making the clouds so hot they look like lava, flame and smoke. The volcano is actually dormant. The best sunrise shots at Haleakala are with cloud cover, since the sun and landscape usually rise above the clouds. Without clouds, you have a plain backlit silhouette that's not as interesting. The best photographic opportunities for a cloudless Haleakala are at sunset. Again, Google "Haleakala sunrise" and you'll see thousands of the same shots of the main ridge with harsh light flaring into the lens. The real light is to the side, where it gives form and mood to the peaks.
